Mountaineers, Lions split doubleheader; Mohawk offense explodes in game two

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball ended their 2024 season in a big way, scoring a total of 26 runs in a doubleheader versus the Lambton Lions.

Game one favoured the Lions, who won the contest 17-5, but the Mountaineers offense exploded in game two for a 21-11 victory.

The 21 runs are the most scored by Mohawk in a single-game since September 29, 1995 when they defeated the Canadore Panthers 23-6.

The first game of the day started with the Mountaineers taking a 2-0 first inning lead after Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) hit her second home run of the season.

Lambton would tie the ball game in the fourth inning and add another five in the fifth.

Trailing 7-2 in the bottom half of the fifth, the Mountaineers cut the lead down to two. Both Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB) and Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) scored on a wild pitch, and then Peckham singled home Abi Suffel (Whitby, Ont.).

The close contest left some hope for a Mohawk comeback until Lambton exploded for a 10-run seventh inning to close the door.

In the second game, the Mountaineers scored in every inning, including a big five run fifth.

Makowich finished with three hits, including a home run, four runs scored and three runs batted in. She was a double shy of the cycle.

Peckham was a perfect four-for-four with five RBIs and three runs scored. Additionally, Suffel provided three hits with three runs scored and three RBIs. Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) was two-for-five with two runs and two RBIs, and Emma Harker (Brantford, Ont.) had two hits with four RBIs.

Mohawk ends the 2024 season with a 7-17 record and will miss the playoffs.
