Mountaineers capture a single point with 91st minute goal

HAMILTON, Ont. – A late goal by Jaiden Morgan (Burlington, Ont.) led to a 1-1 draw for Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer versus the Niagara Knights.

It was the Mountaineers first game of 2024 at Tim Hortons Field and things got off to a slow start.

Niagara held an 8-1 first half advantage in shots and took the lead into the break with a 45th minute goal. The Knights goal was a shot attempt from about 35 yards out that snuck into the top of the net.

Mohawk began to apply pressure in the second half with nine shots to Niagara's seven, but time became an enemy as the Mountaineers had yet to break through.

The game official added one minute of extra time to the match and Mohawk was finally able to find a way to even the scoring.

Morgan, also shooting from roughly 35 yards out, beat the Knights keeper to tie the match at 1-1 in the 91st minute. It was Morgan's second of the season and second in as many games.

The draw snapped a two-game losing streak for the Mountaineers, bringing their record to 1-2-1.

Mohawk will take a full week off to now prepare for the Fanshawe Falcons. The match will take place on Sept. 25 at Tim Hortons Field beginning at 6 p.m.
