Mountaineers handed 8-1 loss by Hawks

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball lost 8-1 to the Humber Hawks on Sunday afternoon.

All of the Hawks eight runs were scored in the second inning with three being unearned.

The Mountaineers had an opportunity to score in the third inning after back-to-back two out singles by Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) and Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.), but Mohawk could not bring either runner around.

Another opportunity for the Mountaineers came in the sixth with Abi Suffel (Whitby, Ont.) hitting a leadoff double and two batters later Kerri Smith (Hagersville, Ont.) singled. Smith later stole second setting up a runner on third and second with one out situation, but again Mohawk was held off the scoreboard.

The Mountaineers only run was scored in the seventh when Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) doubled, advanced to third on a ground out and then crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Mohawk's lone bright spot of the day was Rachel Lee's (Drayton, Ont.) pitching performance in relief. Lee went 4.2 innings, struck out two and only allowed one run.

The Mountaineers season will continue on Sept. 25 when they head to Toronto, Ont. to play the Seneca Sting in a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 6 p.m.
