Background:
Prior to the 2021 season, David Hopton was named the 10th head coach in Mountaineers cross country history.

Outside of Mohawk, Hopton is the head coach for the Hammerheads and Koalas triathlon program. In 2023, Hopton was named the Triathlon Ontario Coach of the Year.

At Mohawk:

2021 Season:

In his first season with the Mountaineers, Hopton guided the men's team to an OCAA bronze medal. This season established a foundation for future success for the cross country program for both the men's and women's teams.

2022 Season:

After falling shy of a podium finish the season prior, the Mountaineers women's team won its first provincial medal since 1996, claiming an OCAA bronze.

2023 Season:

Hopton was at the helm of one of the greatest seasons in Mohawk cross country history with both the men and women medaling in the same year for the first time in 35 years. This season included the men winning their first OCAA Championship since 1994 and the women's team claiming their second consecutive bronze medal. The Mountaineers also had two runners win individual medals with Sage Sulentic and Annie Sterenberg winning bronze.

This season Hopton earned both OCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year and CCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year honours.

2024 Season:

The success of the Mohawk cross country program continued under Hopton's guidance during the 2024 season. Mohawk's women's cross country team claimed its first OCAA Championship in 36 years and captured their first national medal with a CCAA bronze. On the men's side, the team won its third OCAA medal in four seasons with a silver. The men's team placed eighth at the CCAA Championships. Albert Lanting of the men's team also earned an individual OCAA silver medal.

The 2024 season was the first-time the CCAA introduced a mixed division to the championships, which combined the top three finishers from both the men's and women's races to determine an overall champion. Mohawk's top-three runners from both sides combined for a third overall finish, earning a CCAA mixed bronze medal.
