Mountaineers clinch playoff spot following home sweep

Mohawk ends season with four consecutive wins

(HAMILTON) – Mohawk Mountaineers softball has locked in an OCAA playoff spot for the first time since 2017 following a home doubleheader sweep of the Fanshawe Falcons.

The 11-6 and 5-4 victories marked the end of the regular season for Mohawk, who finish with a 10-14 record.

Game one: Mohawk 11 – Fanshawe 6

Danika Millen (Milton, ON) led the Mountaineers offense in their 11-run explosion, tying their season-high for runs in a game.

Mohawk fell behind in the first inning 2-0, but immediately answered in the bottom half when Millen tripled home Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, ON) and Kerri Smith (Hagersville, ON). Millen would then score off a Chantal Tripp (Brampton, ON) single, giving the Mountaineers the 3-2 lead.

In the second, Mohawk would add two from off a LaForme single only for Fanshawe to answer in the top of the third to cut the home teams lead to 5-4. It was then an immediate response from the Mountaineers in the bottom half, getting one run back.

Mohawk would open it up in the fourth with three runs to take a 9-4 lead. It started with a Michaela Walker (Dundas, ON) sacrifice fly and then Tripp singled to score two.

The Falcons scored another in the fifth, but again the Mountaineers responded with a Millen single that scored two unearned runs. Fanshawe would then add one in the seventh, but that was the end of any comeback.

Tripp got the win for Mohawk, pitching a complete-game, allowing four earned runs and striking out six. Offensively, Tripp was two-for-four and drove home three.

Millen finished the game two-for-three, driving in four runs and scoring twice. LaForme was also solid, batting three-for-four with two RBIs and scoring twice.

Game two: Mohawk 5 – Fanshawe 4

The Falcons got the scoring started once again in game two, bringing home a run in the first and third innings.

In the bottom half of the third, the Mountaineers would bring across four runs to take the lead. It started with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by LaForme, Millen and Walker, and then Tripp would hit a sac-fly to score Millen.

Ella Busch (Orton, ON) would single for an RBI in the fifth to give Mohawk the 5-2 lead.

Fanshawe threatened a comeback in the sixth, cutting the Mountaineers lead to 5-4 but Rachel Lee (Drayton, ON) would shut the door. Lee pitched seven innings for Mohawk, giving up two earned runs and striking out four.

Looking ahead:

The Mountaineers will now prepare for the OCAA Championship tournament that will be hosted by the Humber Hawks between October 19-21.
