Mountaineers advance with a late offensive burst

Mohawk defeats Fanshawe 9-2 in opening playoff game

(ETOBICOKE) – Mohawk Mountaineers softball will advance to the next round of the OCAA playoffs following a 9-2 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons.

The Mountaineers offense didn't come alive until the fifth inning when they trailed the Falcons 1-0. Chantal Tripp (Brampton, ON) started the Mohawk scoring when she hit a single and advanced to third on two errors. She would then score on a wild pitch.

Rachel Lee (Drayton, ON), who walked in the inning, would later score after Kayla Makowich (Guelph, ON) singled to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 advantage.

Mohawk would add another in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Mountaineers would expand their lead in the top half of the seventh with six runs. It started with a Kerri Smith (Hagersville, ON) single that scored Ella Busch (Orton, ON) and then with the bases loaded Ashley LaForme ((New Cedit, ON) walked to score Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, ON).

The inning would continue with Danika Millen (Milton, ON), who was named an OCAA Second-Team All-Star, driving home Smith and Makowich. Millen would later score on a wild pitch and the final Mohawk run would also cross the plate on a wild pitch, scoring Michaela Walker (Dundas, ON)

Fanshawe would score one in the bottom of the seventh. Mohawk would shut the door from there.

Tripp gave the Mountaineers a great pitching performance, going a complete seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out nine.

Seven of the 10 Mohawk hitters who had an at-bat had at least one hit in the game and nine of them scored a run.

The Mountaineers now advance in the OCAA playoffs and will have an opportunity to play for a medal with a win on Friday.

Mohawk will play the first seed Durham Lords on Oct. 20 at Connorvale Park beginning at 11 a.m. The winner will then play the winner between the St. Clair Saints and Humber Hawks, while the loser will play the loser of that game.
