Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Morgan’s 89th minute goal lifts Mountaineers past Falcons

Mohawk women’s soccer advances to OCAA quarter-finals

(HAMILTON) – Despite a shaky opening 30 minutes, Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer showed resilience in a 3-2 OCAA qualifying match win over the Fanshawe Falcons.

Mohawk came into the opening round of playoffs as the three seed in the OCAA West Division and Fanshawe – who the Mountaineers defeated earlier this season 3-0 – entered postseason play as the seventh seed in the West.

Regardless of the seedings, the Falcons began the match with all the momentum, scoring the first two goals of the game in the 16th and 25th minutes.

The Mohawk coaching staff felt change had to be made to balance out the match.

"We had to change our formation," said head coach Paul Giannini. "They came out with a different formation than they've been playing so after they got their second, we quickly changed to a different formation and it started balancing out."

In the 44th minute the Mountaineers were able to get one back off a Janelle Lammers (Frankford, ON) corner kick that Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, ON) buried home.

The two teams would head into half tied 1-1.

"In the second half we changed to a third formation, which gave us a little more edge," Giannini said. "Credit to the girls for being able to change three formations in one game."

With the momentum on their side, a Paige Epp (Grimsby, ON) soft touch pass in the 59th minute found Jaiden Morgan (Burlington, ON) who would even the match at 2-2.

"I knew we were way stronger than the way we started," Morgan said. "All we needed to do was refocus at the half."

As the game began to inch closer to the 90th minute, action began to speed up on both sides of the pitch. In the 88th minute the Falcons got a shot off, but Mohawk goalkeeper Samantha DeHaan (Smithville, ON) made a spectacular save to keep it a two a piece.

Then in the 89th minute a lead pass found Morgan once again, who with a Falcons defender on her shoulder scored her second of the game and the winning goal for Mohawk.

"One thing about me, I'll do what I have to do," Morgan said. "Every single time I'll do what I have to do."

With the 3-2 victory the Mountaineers advance to the OCAA quarter-final round for the second consecutive year, where they will play the Durham Lords.

In the 2022 quarter-final match it was Durham who eliminated Mohawk.

The rematch between the Mountaineers and Lords will be played on Oct. 21 in Oshawa, ON at Vaso's Field beginning at 3 p.m.
