Game Recap: Women's Softball |

Gritty performance by Lee helps Mohawk sweep Sheridan

Two Rachel Lee relief appearances slow down Bruins offense

(HAMILTON) – Mohawk Mountaineers softball received some timely hitting along with two strong relief appearances from Rachel Lee (Drayton, ON) to sweep the Sheridan Bruins in doubleheader action, 9-8 and 7-5.

Game one: Mohawk 9 – Sheridan 8

The opening game of the evening was a tough start for the Mountaineers as the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

In the top of the second with Sheridan threatening again, the game was halted for approximately 30 minutes due to a rain delay. The Bruins would still score three in the second once play resumed, but a pitching change that brought on Lee for Mohawk would alter the games momentum.

The Mountaineers would answer with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the second to cut the Sheridan lead down to 7-4.

From there the Mountaineers continued their comeback with one run in the third, and then Kayla Makowich (Guelph, ON) hit a bases clearing triple in the fifth to give Mohawk a 9-7 lead.

Makowich went two-for-five at the plate with five runs batted in. Emma Harker (Brantford, ON) was also impressive, going a perfect three-for-three with two runs scored.

Lee would only surrender one run in relief, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out four.

Game two: Mohawk 7 – Sheridan 5

With the rain out of the way, game two was still a slow start for both teams. Both the Mountaineers and Bruins scored one each in the second with Sheridan tacking on three in the third. In the bottom half of the third, Mohawk would score one to cut the Bruins lead to 4-2.

The Mountaineers would continue to chip away adding a run in the fourth and fifth to tie it up at four, but Sheridan answered with one of their own in the top half of the sixth to regain a 5-4 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Makowich would double to plate two runs, giving Mohawk the 6-4 lead. Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, ON) would then single to score Makowich, ultimately giving Mohawk the 7-5 win.

"Today, we really got the timely hits, and we got multiples of it which helped us a lot," said head coach Chris McColl. "Defensively, we still got to not give up what we're giving up, but today was nice to see the timely hits repeatedly happening."

Chantal Tripp (Brampton, ON) gave Mohawk a great start, going three innings and allowing four runs, only two of which were earned.

Lee would pitch in relief again, providing the Mountaineers four innings and surrendering one unearned run.

McColl said Lee's performance was just her being her true self.

"She's very gritty. She's got the endurance to go and she just kept us grounded and brought everybody back down," McColl said. "She kept them off balance and gave us a chance to comeback and win both games, which we did."

Offensively, Makowich went two-for-four with two runs and two RBIs. Both Michaela Walker (Dundas, ON) and Ella Busch (Orton, ON) had two hits and each drove in a run.

Mohawk will get three days of rest before travelling to Etobicoke, ON to play the Humber Hawks at Connorvale Park on Oct. 1. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. and both games will be streamed on OCAA Live.
