Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Chong scores career-high 48 in loss versus Saints

No. 14 Mountaineers fall to No. 11 Saints

WINDSOR Iverson Chong scored a career-high 48 points on 14-of-25 shooting and 11 three-pointers, but it wasn't enough for the No. 14 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers as they were defeated 111-96 by the No. 11 St. Clair Saints.

Both teams came out cold in the opening quarter, shooting an equal 27.8 per cent from the field. St. Clair would lead 16-14.

The Mountaineers would struggle defensively in the second quarter with the Saints scoring 36 points on 61.9 per cent shooting and knocking down eight triples. Mohawk would go into the break down by 19.

In the second half Chong (Oakville, ON) would do everything in his power to reel Mohawk back into the game. Chong along with Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, ON) would score a combined 24 points in the third quarter for the Mountaineers.

It wouldn't make a dent in the St. Clair lead as the home team shot 73.7 per cent from the field in the third and extended their lead to 21.

But the fourth quarter was all Chong. The first-year point guard would score 20 of his career-high 48 points in the frame, all of which coming on five threes and five free throws.

Mohawk would get within 13 of St. Clair, but it was too late for a comeback.

Chong's performance is the most points scored in a game by a Mountaineer this season.

Mohawk also received 14 points from Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON). Jackson scored 12 and Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) would add 12 as well.

The Mountaineers return home to the DBARC for action on Jan. 24 when they host the Niagara Knights at 8 p.m.
