Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Offensive slumps loom costly as Mountaineers drop third straight

Mohawk shooting goes cold in fourth quarter

HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball entered the fourth quarter versus the Niagara Knights with a six points lead, but struggles offensively in the final frame would loom costly as the Mountaineers slipped to a 60-55 loss.

In the opening quarter Mohawk controlled the pace of play with strong rebounding and led by five after the first 10 minutes.

Niagara would bounce back in the second scoring 14 straight and holding the Mountaineers scoreless until 2:37 left in the half. Mohawk would close the half on an 11-4 run, but trail 30-28.

Skyla Minaker (Sarnia, ON) scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the third as the Mountaineers once again took the lead, 46-40.

The fourth quarter would be Mohawk's worst offensive quarter, scoring nine points on 20 per cent shooting. It would be an 11-point swing for the Knights as they took the lead with 1:12 remaining.

Along with her 19-point game, Minaker also had six steals in the content. Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, ON) was a spark off the bench with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Mountaineers will now take more than a week off before travelling to play the Conestoga Condors on Feb. 2 at 6 p.m.
