HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball defeated the Canadore Panthers 102-72 following a pre-game delay that took nearly an hour long.
As warm-ups were finishing up, a 360 dunk would bend one of the basketball rims in the DBARC, causing the delay. Mohawk game day staff would be able to install a new rim within an hour.
Once action tipped off the Mountaineers got off to a 17-3 run. The opening quarter would end with Mohawk leading Canadore 36-13.
The start of the second quarter saw some pushback from the Panthers with an 8-2 run, but the Mountaineers responded later with a 10-0 run of their own to take a halftime lead of 62-32.
Mohawk's offense would slow down in the second half as they shot 40 per cent from the field, but one-of-12 from three. Despite the struggles from deep, Canadore would not make another push as the Mountaineers cruised to the 30-point victory.
Iverson Chong (Oakville, ON) scored 13 of his team-high 21 points in the first quarter. Harpreet Gill (Brampton, ON) had a near double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) added 16 and Jailen Jackson (Hamilton, ON) and Michael Barry (Hamilton, ON) both scored 12 each.
With three games left on the season Mohawk has a 10-5 record and currently hold the second seed in the OCAA West division.
The Mountaineers will be on the road next as they'll play the Conestoga Condors on Feb. 2 at 8 p.m.
