Mountaineers advance to OCAA quarterfinals

CAMBRDIGE, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer team has advanced to the OCAA quarterfinals following a 3-1 defeat of the Conestoga Condors.

This is the third consecutive year the Mountaineers have reached the conference quarter-final match.

Coming into the game Mohawk ranked as the fifth seed in the OCAA west division, meanwhile Conestoga had secured the fourth seed.

The Mountaineers got out in front early with an eighth minute goal by Jaiden Morgan (Burlington, Ont.), assisted by Janelle Lammers (Frankford, Ont.).

Mohawk would quickly double their lead in the 15th minute when a Lammers corner kick found Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington, Ont.) for their second goal of the game.

Lammers has been a factor on nine of the 16 goals the Mountaineers have scored this year.

The Condors had one shot attempt on net, which beat Mohawk goalkeeper Samantha DeHaan (Smithville, Ont.) just before halftime to cut the Mountaineers lead down to 2-1.

Emily Schwarz (Stoney Creek, Ont.) restored the two goal Mohawk lead in the 81st minute. Glasbergan would be credited with the assist.

The Mountaineers had to play the final five minutes of the match with 10 athletes after Morgan received her second yellow of the game.

While having reached the quarterfinals three years in a row, Mohawk has not won in the quarter-final round since 2005.

They will look to end that streak on Oct. 19 when they travel to play the OCAA east division one seed and No. 1 nationally ranked Seneca Sting. Action will take place at Newnham Field in Toronto, Ont. with kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
