Two headers lead to 2-0 Mohawk win

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's soccer team defeated the Sheridan Bruins 2-0 with both goals being scored on headers.

The headers were prompted by corner kicks by Janelle Lammers (Frankford, Ont.), who this week was named both Mountaineers Athlete of the Week and OCAA Star of the Week.

Four of Mohawk's last five goals have now been scored off a Lammers corner kick.

Against the Bruins, Lammers first corner found the head of Sylvia Sokacz (Oakville, Ont.) in the 30th minute of the match. Not only was it Sokacz's first of the season, but the third-year's first OCAA goal.

Then in the second half, Caludia Calix (Mississauga, Ont.) used her head off a Lammers' corner in the 83rd minute to score her first career OCAA goal.

The Mountaineers held the Bruins to two shots on goal for the match.

Mohawk has now won three consecutive with a trio of games remaining on the season.

Their next match on Oct. 5 will wrap-up their home portion of the campaign as they host the Humber Hawks at Tim Hortons Field for a 2 p.m. start.
