Mountaineers playoff hopes ended by Falcons

LONDON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team needed to be near perfect in their final four games of the season for any hope of making the OCAA playoffs, but two losses to the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday ended any hope.

Game one favoured the Falcons 10-6 while game two ended 7-3 for Fanshawe.

In the opening game, Mohawk fell behind 4-1 in the first inning, but tied it up with three runs in the second.

The Mountaineers second inning included a Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) single to score Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) followed by a Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB) triple to cash in Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) and Makowich.

It was in the fourth inning when the Falcons put up a four spot to go up 8-4 while they added another two in the fifth.

Mohawk's rally was halted in the sixth after they scored two runs. Bourque would hit her second triple of the game to score Makowich and Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) would bring Bourque home with a single.

The second game saw Fanshawe once again get out in front 3-1. Mohawk would get within one in the third, but again the Falcons responded with two in their half of the inning.

In the fifth the Mountaineers would score another, but they could not rally back, ending the game 7-3.

Makowich was two-for-three in the game with two runs scored and Peckham had a pair of hits to drive in one.

Mohawk concludes the 2024 season Oct. 6 when they host the Lambton Lions at Mohawk Sports Park. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. with a pre-game ceremony to honour the Mountaineers graduating athletes.
