Mountaineers bounce back; defeat Bruins at home

HAMILTON, Ont. – For the second time this season the Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team defeated the Sheridan Bruins, winning the contest 68-55.

It was a slow start for the Mountaineers, who found themselves trailing 14-4 more than seven minutes into the first quarter. Mohawk rallied together a 10-0 run to bring the game within two and then closed out the quarter down 20-19.

The second quarter was led by Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB), who scored 10 points on three-of-six shooting and four made free throws. Early in the frame the Mountaineers did fall behind eight, but they went on another 10-0 run to take a 29-27 lead. The two teams closed the first half tied 38-38.

Mohawk played a much more efficient game in the third quarter, holding Sheridan to seven-points. The Mountaineers started the quarter on a 12-0 run and would hold onto the 12-point advantage to lead 57-45.

Both teams struggled offensively in the final quarter with Mohawk only making three field goals and Sheridan being held to two. Despite the inefficiencies to closeout the game, the Mountaineers were able to hold on to get back into the win column, and bring their record to 4-1.

Jacob led Mohawk with 17 points, while Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) put up a monster double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) also provided 13 points.

The Mountaineers will now prepare to play the No. 12 nationally ranked Niagara Knights in Welland, Ont. on Nov. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
