Mountaineers win big at home over Panthers

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team took care of business at home, defeating the Canadore Panthers 99-82.
 
Mohawk started the game on a 9-0 run with the lead extending to 10 at the end of the first quarter. Despite the Mountaineers leading 25-15, both teams struggled to hold onto the ball as they combined for 15 turnovers. Mohawk's success came from the free throw line as they shot a perfect nine-for-nine.
 
To start the second quarter it was Canadore going on a run of their own, cutting the Mohawk lead down to six. The Mountaineers got their lead back up to nine, but the Panthers kept pushing, eventually taking their first lead of the game at 40-39 with 22 seconds left in the half. Harpreet Gill (Brampton, Ont.) made a short floater to give Mohawk a 41-40 lead at half.
 
The start of the third quarter was a similar act as the first with the Mountaineers jumping out to a 9-2 run. Mohawk then grew their lead to 18 with a minute left in the third and ended the quarter leading Canadore 71-56.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers grew their advantage to 22 points with 39 seconds left, closing the door for the victory.
 
Gill led Mohawk in scoring with 20 points on seven-of-12 shooting. Caldre Campbell (Hamilton, Ont.) came off the bench to add 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists.
 
The Mountaineers will hit the road for their next game on Nov. 22 when they play the St. Clair Saints at 8 p.m.
