Mountaineers sweep Vipers to end first half

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team swept the Boreal Vipers 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-11) to end the 2024 portion of their schedule.

In the first half of the season, the Mountaineers played to a 5-6 record, winning three of their last five matches.

Mohawk came out strong versus Boreal, taking an early 8-4 lead. The advantage for the Mountaineers would extend to 10 late in the set as they led 1-0 in the match.

Set two had the Vipers playing much more competitively, but after a 14-14 tie, Mohawk strung together consecutive points to hold a solid lead and go up 2-0 in the match.

The match became much more lopsided in the third set with Mohawk taking an early 9-1 lead. The Mountaineers continued to extend their lead in the third to closeout the match for a 3-0 sweep.

Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) and Brecken Morrison (Stouffville, Ont.) each had five kills in the match. Cole Crowder (Milton, Ont.) operated a solid offense with 19 assists.

Mohawk will take a month off for the holidays and then in early January non-conference action will take place with the Mountaineers competing at the Niagara Invitational. OCAA regular season competition for the Mountaineers will return on Jan. 8 when they host the Fanshawe Falcons at 8 p.m.
