Mountaineers closeout first half with road victory

SUDBURY, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball closed out the first half of the 2024-25 season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) victory over the Boreal Vipers.
 
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, but momentum immediately switched to the Vipers as they led 10-7. Both teams would trade leads throughout the set, but once even at 17-17 it was Mohawk that took complete control. The Mountaineers would go on to score eight of the next nine points to win the opening set.
 
Set two saw more lead changes between the two teams. Even at 15-15, Mohawk again found rhythm to build a 20-15 lead. Boreal would get back within three, but that is as close as the set would get as the Mountaineers took a 2-0 match lead.
 
In set three Mohawk got off to a really slow start, trailing Boreal 6-0. The Mountaineers got out in front at 13-12 and held the lead until the Vipers tied it up at 18-18. From there Mohawk scored seven of the next eight to win the match.   
 
Naomi Moreton (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with seven kills in three sets played. Megan Battersby (Welland, Ont.) provided 19 assists and Marie Cerasuolo (Etobicoke, Ont.) had 11 digs.
 
Mohawk's win snapped a three-game losing streak as the team finishes the first half with an 8-3 record. Mohawk started the year with seven consecutive wins.
 
The Mountaineers will be back in action during a non-conference invitational tournament held at Niagara College in the new year. Regular season play returns on Jan. 8 in the DBARC when Mohawk hosts the Fanshawe Falcons at 6 p.m.
