Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mountaineers season ends at the hands of No. 11 Huskies

Mohawk struggles at free throw line in close contest

TORONTO – Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball hung around all game, but ran out of steam in the end, losing their OCAA quarter-final game 101-90 to the No. 11 nationally ranked George Brown Huskies.

The Mountaineers this season had played a majority of the second half without their leading scorer Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) and one of their best three-point shooters Charlie Hennessy (Windsor, ON), and that continued into the playoffs.

But Mohawk had continued to show fight with a depleted roster. They showed the grit and resilience once again versus George Brown.

The two teams played evenly matched basketball in the opening quarter and were tied 24-24.

In the second, the Huskies shot 64.3 per cent from the field despite turning the ball over nine times. Their shooting ability gave them a three-point advantage over the Mountaineers at halftime.

Mohawk continued to hang around in the second half, cutting the George Brown lead down to two heading into the fourth quarter.

Ultimately, the Mountaineers struggles at the free throw line would be the deciding factor. Mohawk was 21-of-37 from the line for a 56.8 per cent.

The Mountaineers were down 90-88 with 2:34 remaining, but the Huskies would end the game on an 11-2 run.

Mohawk just misses out on a second consecutive OCAA semi-final appearance. They concluded regular season play with an 11-7 record.

Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) led Mohawk with 27 points and seven rebounds. Iverson Chong (Oakville, ON) scored 24, while Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) provided 18.
