Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mountaineers lose OCAA quarter-final 66-58 to No. 2 Wolves

Mohawk season comes to an end

OTTAWA – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball season came to an end in the OCAA quarter-finals after a 66-58 loss to the No. 2 nationally ranked Algonquin Wolves.

It was a pretty even first quarter between the two with the Mountaineers taking a 16-14 lead. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) got off to a great start for Mohawk, scoring seven of her 13 points in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter the Wolves protected the ball well, only committing one turnover. The Mountaineers on the other hand had six turnovers in the quarter and lost the rebound battle 10-7, as Algonquin went into halftime leading by four.

Offensively, Mohawk went cold in the third quarter, only making three field goals for seven total points. The Wolves would extend their lead to 15.

The Mountaineers tried to make a fourth quarter comeback but time was not on their side. Mohawk shot 42.9 per cent from the field in the final frame and held Algonquin to two-of-11 shooting.

The game got within eight points with 1:38 left, but the Mountaineers could only get one more shot after that as they would fall to the Wolves for the second consecutive year in the OCAA playoffs.

Jacob had six rebounds to go along with her 13 points. Skyla Minaker (Sarnia, ON) also provided 13 points for Mohawk and Maddie Anderson (Whitby, ON) had 11.

The Mountaineers had an impressive turnaround season after only winning five games a year ago. Mohawk concluded regular season with a 12-4 record and had three players recognized in the OCAA year-end awards.
