Peckham hits first career home run; Mountaineers pickup first win

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball snapped an early season losing streak after splitting a doubleheader versus the Conestoga Condors.

In game one of the day, the Condors came out on top 10-7 in extra innings, extending the Mountaineers losing streak to seven.

Mohawk found themselves in a hole early as Conestoga jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

In the bottom of the third, Chloe Ferko (Stoney Creek, Ont.) and Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) both hit sacrifice flies to cash in a run each, cutting the Condors lead in half.

The Mountaineers would give the four-run lead back in the top half of the fourth with the Condors taking a 6-2 lead.

In the bottom half, Mohawk loaded the bases, and would cash in a run on an Abi Suffel (Whitby, Ont.) walk. Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) would then reach on error, scoring two, and Ferko's second sacrifice fly evened up the score.

Conestoga again regained the lead, scoring a run in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ferko picked up her third RBI of the game to bring the score back to even at 7-7.

Mohawk had an opportunity to end the game in the bottom of the seventh when Mackenzie Howarth (Stoney Creek, Ont.) led off with a walk. Howarth advanced to third after a couple groundouts, but the Mountaineers could not cash her home.

The game ended in extra innings with the Condors scoring three in the top of the eighth before holding the Mountaineers off the board in the bottom half to close the door.

Despite the loss to start the day, Mohawk bounced back in a big way in game two, defeating Conestoga 9-4.

LaForme pitched a complete game, giving up all four Condor runs, but she did strikeout three.

It was Conestoga who broke through first in this game as well, scoring a run in the top of the first. Mohawk immediately answered with one of their own in the bottom half.

The Condors then scored two in their half of the second, but the Mountaineers stormed back in a big way in the bottom half.

With runners on the corners, Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) would steal second and on the throw down, Howarth stole home. Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) then tripled to score Lupton and Makowich would later score on an error to make it 4-3 Mohawk.

The Mountaineers tacked on one more in the third with an Ella Busch (Orton, Ont.) single that cashed in LaForme.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mohawk scored four more highlighted by a Peckham two-run home run. It was Peckham's first career OCAA home run.

Conestoga scored one in the fifth but Mohawk shut the door the rest of the way.

The Mountaineers had five different players pickup an RBI in the contest.

With the win Mohawk's record is now 1-7.

They'll be back at Mohawk Sports Park on Sept. 19 when they host the Humber Hawks for a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 6 p.m.
