Mountaineers split doubleheader versus Hawks

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball split a Thursday night doubleheader versus the Humber Hawks. The Mountaineers won game one 5-2 and lost the second game 17-6.

Mohawk's victory over Humber was the programs first since an October 20, 2017 playoff game.

The Mountaineers received a tremendous pitching performance from Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) in the doubleheader opener. Tripp pitched a complete game, giving up two runs and striking out five.

Humber's first run came in the top of the first. Then for the next four innings the game went scoreless.

There were multiple chances for Mohawk to strike, but they consistently left runners on base. The Mountaineers had runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings but could not drive them home.

In the fourth inning Mohawk had its best opportunity with two runners on with one out, but left both on after a fly out and strikeout.

The Hawks would cash in their second run in the top of sixth.

Then in the bottom half of the inning the Mountaineers rallied to take the lead.

Abi Suffel (Whitby, Ont.) and Chloe Ferko (Stoney Creek, Ont.) led the inning off with back-to-back singles, and Tripp would reach on an error to load the bases with no outs. Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) then singled to score Suffel. Mohawk would tie the game at 2-2 when Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.) walked with the bases loaded.

Kayla Makowich then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Mountaineers the 3-2 lead. Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) capped off the sixth inning with a two-run single to put Mohawk up 5-2.

Tripp would shut the door in the seventh, but not without some trouble. After two consecutive popups, the Hawks next two batters reached and advanced on a wild pitch to setup a two-out situation with runners on second and third. Despite being in the jam, Tripp settled in to get a ground out to end the game.

Game two started with Mohawk falling behind early as Humber scored seven first inning runs.

The Mountaineers responded with three in their half. It started with a Peckham ground out to score Makowich, then LaForme doubled home two.

The Hawks tacked on a run in the second, scored two each in the third and fourth before adding five in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Mohawk did receive an RBI single from Suffel in the third and a Makowich double in the fourth scored another two.

The Mountaineers next two contests will come on the road on Sept. 21 in London, Ont. when they face the Lambton Lions (1 p.m.) and Fanshawe Falcons (3 p.m.).
