Mountaineers lose two in London

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LONDON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball lost two games on Saturday. In the first game they fell to the Lambton Lions 10-3 and then lost 8-4 to the Fanshawe Falcons.

In the opener Mohawk started the top of the first inning with a leadoff double from Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.), who would advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB) ground out.

But as the case has been for the Mountaineers in previous games, they struggled on the defensive side of the ball in the first inning, giving up six runs to the Lions.

While the Mountaineers settled down after that to only to give up four runs the rest of the game, their offense could not rally.

In the seventh Mohawk did add two following a Lambton error, allowing Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.) and Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) to score off a Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) single.

In game two the Mountaineers once again fell behind early, allowing five combined runs in the opening two innings.

Mohawk cut the Fanshawe lead down to three in the third inning with a Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) double that scored two.

The Mountaineers then got within one run in the fifth after Peckham singled to score Abi Suffel (Whitby, Ont.) and Chloe Ferko (Stoney Creek, Ont.) also later singled in the inning to score Kerri Smith (Hagersville, Ont.).

Trailing 5-4 Mohawk's offense went quiet for the remainder of the game as Fanshawe scored three more to shut the door on any comeback.

The Mountaineers will hope to snap their three-game losing streak on Sept. 22 when they host the Humber Hawks at Mohawk Sports Park. Game time is 1 p.m.
