HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team extended their win streak to four games after sweeping the Lambton Lions on Wednesday, winning 7-3 and 10-3.
In Game 1, Mohawk opened the scoring in the first inning when Zoey Lorentz (Kitchener, Ont.) singled home Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.). Lambton tied it in the second with a solo home run, but the Mountaineers responded with four runs in their half of the inning.
After an RBI single from Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.), LaForme launched a three-run homer to give Mohawk a 5-1 lead. The Lions cut the deficit to two in the fifth, but Lupton drove in two more runs with a single to seal the win.
LaForme went the distance in the circle, striking out four over seven innings.
The Mountaineers' offence stayed hot in Game 2, scoring six runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Taylor McCrae (Milton, Ont.) drew a walk to score the first run, followed by a two-run single from Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB), an RBI double by Ashka Pieris-Stevens (Milton, Ont.), and a two-run single from Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.).
Lambton added a run in the second before Mohawk replied in their half to make it 7-1. The Lions added one more in the fourth, but Mohawk continued to pile on with an RBI groundout from Lupton in the fifth and a two-run double from Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.) in the sixth. Lorentz added an RBI groundout before the Lions scored their final run in the seventh.
Lee pitched all seven innings for Mohawk, allowing just two earned runs.
The two wins keep Mohawk's playoff hopes alive. The Mountaineers close out the regular season on Oct. 10 in Kitchener, Ont., with a doubleheader against the Conestoga Condors. Mohawk will need to sweep the series to clinch a postseason berth.
