Mountaineers drop pair to begin 2024 season

WINDSOR, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball began the 2024 season with two tough losses on the road.
 
Playing in Windsor, Ont., the Mountaineers lost 12-2 to the Sheridan Bruins and 11-1 to the St. Clair Saints.
 
In the opening matchup, Sheridan jump out to a 9-0 lead in the first three innings. The Mountaineers would score one each in the fourth and fifth innings, but it wasn't enough to extend the game.
 
Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) and Emily Maas (Brantford, Ont.) scored Mohawk's only two runs, while Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB) and Ella Busch (Orton, Ont.) drove them home.
 
Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.) had a solid performance in relief, pitching 3.1 innings and only surrendering three runs.
 
In the second game of the day versus the host Saints, the Mountaineers gave up nine runs in the second inning making a comeback difficult.
 
Mohawk's lone run was scored by Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) and Bourque drove her in for her first career RBI.
 
The Mountaineers will immediately get an opportunity to turn their fortune as they'll return to Hamilton to play two on Sept. 8. They'll host the Durham Lords at 11 a.m. and the Conestoga Condors at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Mohawk Sports Park – Diamond 1.
