Mountaineers home opener spoiled with two losses

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball remains winless early into the 2024 season following a pair of losses on their home field.
 
The day started with an 8-4 loss to the Durham Lords.
 
It was the Mountaineers who opened the scoring after Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) had a first inning leadoff walk and would come around to score.
 
The Lords would take the lead in the top half of the second and added a run in the fourth to go up 4-1.
 
In the bottom of the fifth Mohawk rallied to even the scoring. It started with a Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) single that drove home Katie O'Toole (Mississauga, Ont.). Tripp would then score on a Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) double, which followed with a Makowich single to score Lupton.
 
Durham regained the lead in the top of the sixth to go up 5-4, and added another three in the seventh to close the door.
 
Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.) provided the Mountaineers with four innings pitched and only gave up one earned run. Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) came on in relief, pitching three innings and striking out three.
 
In the second game of the day Mohawk had its best offensive performance of the young season, but ultimately lost 11-7 to the Conestoga Condors.
 
Both teams scored in each of the first four innings with the Mountaineers holding a 7-4 lead after the top half of the fourth. The Condors would take the lead in the bottom half with a four spot, and from there Conestoga held Mohawk off the board.
 
Makowich was two-for-two in the game with three walks, and scored three times. Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) drove in three while going 2-for-3.
 
The Mountaineers will prepare for a doubleheader rematch versus the Lords, which will take place on Sept. 13 in Oshawa, Ont. Game one is scheduled for 6 p.m.
