Mountaineers lose season series to Lords

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OSHAWA, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball lost both games of a doubleheader to the Durham Lords on Friday night.

Game one began with Durham scoring four runs in the first inning en route to a 15-0 defeat of Mohawk. The Lords would tack on five more runs in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth.

The Mountaineers were held hitless in the game.

The second game of the doubleheader was much more competitive as Mohawk received solid pitching from both Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) and Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.).

It was the Mountaineers who scored first when Abi Suffel (Whitby, Ont.) scored on an error in the top half of the first. However, Durham would score two each in the bottom half of the first and second innings to lead 4-1.

Mohawk cut the lead in half in the third when Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, Ont.) singled home Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.).

The Mountaineers threatened again in the top of the sixth when Kerri Smith (Hagersville, Ont.) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs Ella Busch (Orton, Ont.) singled, setting Mohawk up with runners on the corners with two outs. But the Mountaineers would leave the runners stranded.

Durham then stretched their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh Makowich would double with two outs, but after Suffel reached first on an error, Makowich was ruled out in a run down between third and home to end the game.

The Mountaineers through six games this season are winless, and will look to turn their fortunes around at Mohawk Sports Park on Sept. 15 when they host the Conestoga Condors for a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 1 p.m.
