Smith, Raza named Mountaineers Athletes of the Week

HAMILTON, Ont. – Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) of the women's basketball team and Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) of men's basketball have been named the Mohawk Mountaineers Athletes of the Week for the period of October 27 to November 2.

Smith had a career game to lead the Mountaineers to a 29-point win over the Sheridan Bruins. The third-year guard, in her first season with Mohawk, scored a career-high 26 points on 11-for-17 shooting in 20 minutes of play. Smith's performance ranks as the third-highest single-game point total in the OCAA this season and the best in the West Division. The Mountaineers have now opened the 2025-26 season with three straight wins, each by 20 points or more.

Year: 4
Position: Guard
Program: Business

Raza was the most consistent player for the Mountaineers men's basketball team across two games this past week. While not the team's leading scorer, the fourth-year guard contributed in all areas of the game. In a three-point win over the Sheridan Bruins, Raza recorded 12 points, six rebounds and four steals. He followed that with 10 points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of play during a 46-point victory over the Canadore Panthers. Over the two games, he shot 56.3 per cent from the field. The Mountaineers men's basketball team has opened the season with four consecutive wins.

Athlete of the Week honours are presented by Booster Juice. Located in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre, Booster Juice is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
