Season opener for Mountaineers ends in loss

Mohawk’s offense goes cold in fourth quarter

(WELLAND) – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball lost their season opener to the Niagara Knights 56-52.
 
The game was even for the opening 10 minutes, but the Mountaineers were able to take a four-point advantage into half.
 
Mohawk's offense began to slow down in the third quarter, only managing 12 points, but in the fourth the Mountaineers were held to seven points.
 
The Knights continued to chip away at the Mohawk lead throughout the second half and without any offense to answer the Mountaineers fell short.
 
Skyla Minaker (Sarnia, ON) led Mohawk in scoring with 14-points. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) added 10 and Tatjana Boskovic (Hamilton, ON) had a near double-double with eight points and 14 rebounds.
 
As a team the Mountaineers shot 23.4 per cent from the field and struggled from beyond the arc at 14.3 per cent.
 
Mohawk's next game will be their home opener on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. when they host the Conestoga Condors.
