Mountaineers win nail-biter over Knights to begin season

Mohawk holds off late Niagara comeback

(WELLAND) – Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball pulled off a two-point win over the Niagara Knights, 81-79, to begin the 2023-24 campaign.

The game started off with the two teams playing back and forth offense throughout the first quarter. Mohawk would lead after the first 25-20.

With just under three minutes left in the half, the Mountaineers extended their lead to eight, but the Knights ended the second quarter on a 9-1 run to head into the break leading Mohawk by one.

The two teams would continue to play a close matchup once second half action began, however, the Mountaineers were able to get the lead back up to eight with under two to play in the third quarter.

Mohawk's biggest lead of the game was 10 and came with 5:12 remaining in the final quarter. But the Knights continued to chip away and pulled within one with 2:36 to play.

Leading 80-79 with 11 seconds remaining, a foul by Niagara sent the Mountaineers Marko Dosen (Hamilton, ON) to the line. Dosen was able to make one-of-two to give Mohawk an 81-79 advantage.

The Knights had one final attempt to tie or win the game, but their last second shot did not fall and the Mountaineers held on for the victory.

Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) led all scorers with 29-points on 10-of-18 shooting and picked up a double-double with 13 rebounds.

Dosen, off the bench, also had a near double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

Next up for Mohawk is their home opener on Oct. 25. They'll host the Conestoga Condors at 8 p.m. inside the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre at Mohawk College.
