Mountaineers soar past Falcons in three sets

Victory gives Mohawk five wins on the season

(LONDON) – It was another clean sweep for Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball as they defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19).
 
Mohawk's five wins this season have all been three set victories, meanwhile their two losses also came in three sets.
 
In the opening set versus the Falcons, the Mountaineers held on to a small lead throughout before the Falcons tied it at 19-19. Mohawk would then go on a 6-1 run to win the set.
 
Set number two started with all the momentum on the side of the Mountaineers as they pulled out to a 13-5 lead. Fanshawe would get within four at 16-12, but Mohawk would complete the set on a 9-3 run.
 
In set three the Mountaineers led 8-4 to start, but the Falcons came flying back to take a 9-8 advantage. Following some back and forth action with Fanshawe leading 12-10, Mohawk rallied together six straight points and held on for the match win.
 
Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, ON) had 10 kills and three aces for the Mountaineers and Thea Spasic (Hamilton, ON) came to life in the third set to finish with 10 kills as well and added six digs.
 
Rachel Vanderwal (Hamilton, ON) had nine kills for Mohawk to go along with two aces and three blocks. Serving was a bright spot for the Mountaineers with Lexie Zicari (Burlington, ON) and Ashley Gibbons (Hamilton, ON) also finishing with three aces each.
 
Mohawk's next matchup will be versus the Redeemer Royals on the road in Ancaster, ON. It will be the second time in three weeks the Mountaineers and Royals will play a quad-header with all four court sports teams in action. The women's volleyball match begins at 1 p.m.
