Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 13 Mountaineers glide to second half comeback over Falcons

Mohawk overcomes 14-point deficit

LONDON – No. 13 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball found themselves down 13-points at halftime versus the Fanshawe Falcons, but showed resiliency for a 98-81 comeback win.

It wasn't clicking defensively for Mohawk in the first half as they allowed Fanshawe to shoot 57.6 per cent from the field. The slow start also included 14 Mountaineers turnovers in the first two quarters combined.

The Falcons would go up 14-points – their largest lead of the game - in the first two minutes of the third. From there Mohawk's offense would start to get going as they answered with a 10-0 run to make it a four-point game.

The Mountaineers would take the lead at 4:36 left in the third. It was their first lead since 3:38 of the first.

In the third quarter Mohawk shot an impressive 59.1 per cent from the field, including five-of-six from three. The quarter ended with the Mountaineers on a 32-11 run.

Mohawk continued to shoot a high percentage in the fourth quarter to extend their lead and come away with the win.

Despite offensive struggles early, the Mountaineers finished the game shooting 48 per cent, and while the Falcons cooled off they still shot 50 per cent overall but only made five threes for the game.

Mohawk won the rebounding battle 45-35, scored 18 points off 28 turnovers and had 19 second chance points.

For the second time this season Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) set a personal best with 35-points to lead the team. The third-year forward would also pickup his fourth double-double of the young season with 13 rebounds and added four blocks.

Mercury now leads the OCAA in scoring at 25.9 points per game.

The Mountaineers also received scoring from Iverson Chong (Oakville, ON), who had 15. Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) added 11 and Marko Dosen (Hamilton, ON) off the bench provided 13.

Mohawk remains on the road of their next game on Nov 25 versus the Sheridan Bruins. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
