Mountaineers win five-set thriller over Royals

Mohawk men’s volleyball cap off Super Saturday with a win

Box Score (HAMILTON) – Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball were on the brink of a loss after losing two of the first three sets versus the Redeemer Royals, but the Mountaineers came together with the home crowd behind them to win 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 25-17, 19-17).

The Mountaineers played a strong opening set, holding the lead for a majority of the time. But momentum would completely shift in the second and third sets as the Royals improved their passing and serving.

Mohawk would reverse the momentum in the fourth set, ultimately forcing a fifth.

Both the Mountaineers and Royals would go back and forth in the final set as the intensity grew. Mohawk would grab a 12-10 lead, but Redeemer found their way back into it. After multiple match points, the Mountaineers would finally pull through for the win.

It was an all-around offensive attack for Mohawk with Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, ON) contributing 13 kills, Dean Zicari (Burlington, ON) adding 10 and Joel Sloots (Hamilton, ON) having nine.

Cole Crowder (Milton, ON) and Noah Bouchard (Oakville, ON) split setter duties as the former finished with 24 assists and the latter with 20.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Nov. 8 when they travel to play the Humber Hawks at 8 p.m.
