No. 15 Mountaineers end first half with loss to No. 6 Saints

Mohawk loses first half lead in third quarter

Box Score HAMILTON – A battle of the two best teams in the OCAA West division did not end in favour of the No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers as they dropped to the No. 6 nationally ranked St. Clair Saints, 91-83.

In what was a battle for sole possession of first place in the west division, Mohawk jumped out to a five-point advantage in the first quarter. The Mountaineers knocked down five triples including three from Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON).

Mohawk defended the perimeter well in the first half, holding St. Clair to two-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc. The solid defence would result in the Mountaineers leading 45-36 at halftime.

After a Mercury jumper to open the second half, the Saints responded with a 12-2 run to cut the Mountaineers lead down to one. St. Clair would take their first lead since the first quarter midway through the third. Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) would respond to give Mohawk the lead again, but the Saints would knock down a three with 4:48 left in the third to go up 57-55. The lead would not change hands after that.

Despite making 13 threes – seven more than the Saints – the Mountaineers would only shoot 37.5 per cent from the field for the game.

Mercury would finish the game with 24 and Calura added 16.

Mohawk will go into the holiday break with a 7-3 record.

They return to action on Jan. 10 when they host the Sheridan Bruins at 8 p.m.
