Jerry Jr. Mercury has his sixth double-double

HAMILTON – Charlie Hennessy and Harpreet Gill came off the bench to combine for 36 points for No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball, who defeated the Lambton Lions 107-101.

Mohawk's bench combined for 47 with Hennessy (Windsor, ON) scoring 19 and Gill (Brampton, ON) adding 17.

Lambton jumped out to a 21-14 lead six minutes into the first, but the Mountaineers responded with a 16-1 run and closed out the quarter leading 34-27.

Midway through the second the Lions evened it up at 41-41, but it was another run for the home team. Mohawk this time would go on a 12-2 run to regain the advantage. However, Lambton would closeout the quarter on a 7-0 run of their own as the Mountaineers led 53-50 at half.

About two minutes into the second half the Lions would take the lead. But the game of runs would continue as the two squads exchanged leads. Mohawk would end the third quarter on a 14-2 run to lead 77-66.

The Mountaineers offense would go cold in the first half of the final quarter as they made one field goal through the first three minutes as Lambton would take an 82-80 lead.

Hennessy would then knock down back-to-back threes to give Mohawk the lead again. The Lions would pushback and lead 95-89 with just over two minutes remaining.

With Lambton in the bonus, the Mountaineers would begin to take advantage at the free throw line, scoring seven points at the charity stripe in under a minute.

With the Lions then up 99-96 with 1:07 left Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) would knock down a three to tie the game. After trading buckets to make it 101-101, Marko Dosen (Hamilton, ON) drained a close-range jumper to put Mohawk up 103-101.

Lambton would finish the game missing their last four shots as the Mountaineers would extend their lead with free throws.

Mercury had a team-high 32-points and his sixth double-double of the season with 14 rebounds. Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) made four of his five free throws late in the game to finish with 10 points.

Mohawk improved their record to 7-2 and now are in a tie for first in the OCAA West with the St. Clair Saints. The Mountaineers next game will be versus the Saints at home on Dec. 2 with tip-off at 4 p.m.
