Mohawk holds top spot in OCAA West after defeating St. Clair

Big second half lifts Mountaineers over No. 10 Saints

HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball extended their win streak to eight with a 78-62 victory over the No. 10 nationally ranked St. Clair Saints.

The Mountaineers end the first half of the season with an 8-1 record and are now 3-0 versus nationally ranked opponents.

Both teams came out shooting the ball well in the opening quarter as the Saints took a 30-26 lead. Mohawk was 42.1 per cent from the field in the first quarter and St. Clair shot 50 per cent.

In the second quarter both teams went cold offensively, but the Saints extended their lead by four to head into halftime up 43-35 on the Mountaineers.

To begin the third Mohawk scored 12 straight to take their first lead since 1:47 left in the first. St. Clair would be held to five total points in the quarter as the Mountaineers outscored them by 15. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) scored 10 of her 23 in the third for Mohawk.

The Mountaineers would extend their lead on the back of a 9-0 fourth quarter run which would be enough to hold off the Saints.

Jacob's 23 points ties her career-high set earlier this season.

Skyla Minaker (Sarnia, ON) had a near triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Maegan Dorris (Brantford, ON) provided 14 and Peyton Connolly (Hamilton, ON) scored 10.
