Mountaineers softball win one in road doubleheader

Mohawk tops win total from last season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (SARNIA) – Following the opening weekend of the 2023 season, Mohawk Mountaineers softball has topped its win total from a year ago.

After splitting two at home on Saturday, the Mountaineers travelled to Sarnia, ON on Sunday where they would also win one of two.

The two victories so far this season is double the win total from 2022.

In the first game versus the Fanshawe Falcons, the two teams would each put up two runs in the first inning. The Falcons would later push across one run to lead 3-2 after three.

It would remain a back and forth affair until Mohawk captured a 7-6 lead following six innings, and would hold Fanshawe off the scoreboard in the final frame for the win.

The victory is the Mountaineers first win over the Falcons since September 27, 2017.

Game two would feature Mohawk and the host Lambton Lions in which the Mountaineers trailed for a majority of the game.

Lambton would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first half of the open inning, but Mohawk answered with four of their own to take a 4-2 advantage. However, the Lions would hold off the Mountaineers offense the rest of the way.

The Lions would then scored three in the third inning and would continue to add runs in the following innings to beat the Mountaineers 10-4.

These two teams will meet again next weekend as Mohawk travels back to Sarnia to play Lambton in two more contests. The doubleheader takes place on Sept. 16 at Tecumseh Park with game one beginning at 1 p.m.
