Double podium finish for Mountaineers in opening race of 2023

Mohawk men claim first place; women place second

(KING CITY) – Mohawk Mountaineers cross country have started the 2023 season with a double podium result. The men accomplished a first-place finish while the women secured second-place in their race.

Podium finishes did not stop there for the Mountaineers as Sage Sulentic (Dundas, ON) as an individual placed second in the men's race and Ava Snyder (Burlington, ON) found the podium at third place on the women's side.

Head coach David Hopton explained the team strategy was to start the races off with a controlled pace.

"We knew we had some pacing issues in workouts, so we focused on starting the race controlled and picking off athletes as we went," Hopton said. "The team executed the plan really well."

The overall success for Mohawk men included four runners placing in the top-10. Joining Sulentic were Matias Tessel (seventh place - Guelph, ON), Albert Lanting (eighth place - Caledonia, ON) and Yassin Saleh (ninth place - Hamilton, ON). Tyler Karl (Collingwood, ON) also had a good race, finishing 35^th.

For the women, five Mountaineers runners finished in the top-21. Joining Snyder were Zoe Thibault (eighth place - Grimsby, ON), Brooklyn Skoog (11^thplace - Brantford, ON), Jordynne Kinrade (20^thplace - Brantford, ON) and Jovana Rivera (21^stplace - Montreal, QC).

"I'm really proud of this team," Hopton added. "They've been putting in work since December to get to this point where we can win a race against the best in the OCAA. This men's win was three years in the making for Will (Summers) and Matias – I'm really happy for them."

The next race for Mohawk will take place Sept. 30 at Fanshawe College in London, ON.
