(HAMILTON) – Mohawk Mountaineers men's soccer faced a scrappy match against the Lambton Lions but emerged victorious with a final score of 2-1.
The game began with Nicholas Tavares (Milton, ON) scoring from an assist by Ronaldo Hylton (Missisauga, ON) in the third minute.
Lambton was able to answer in the 21st minute as the first half ended tied 1-1.
The second half began at a slower pace, but it was Blake Ellis (Hamilton, ON) who secured the lead for Mohawk in the 61st minute with an assist from Tavares.
Mohawk now holds a 2-1-1 record, having picked up a point in each of their last three matches.
"The early goal was a nice start," said Tavares. "We had some hiccups here and there but we got the job done."
"(Lambton) was an aggressive team, but I think we stepped up to their playing style and came out with the result we wanted," added Ellis.
Goalkeeper Oliver Steinke (Dundas, ON) delivered a stunning save in the 87th minute, preserving the team's lead and ultimately contributing to their victory.
"We knew it would be a gritty game," said head coach Jordan Brown. "It was really just about keeping composure and doing the right things."
Mohawk will return back to Sir John Henry Newman on Sept. 23 when they host the St. Clair Saints. Start time is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be available to stream on OCAA Live.
