No. 10 Mountaineers lose tough back-to-back

Mohawk loses second straight on the road

WINDSOR – A tough road trip ended in a 70-59 loss for the No. 10 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers versus the No. 13 St. Clair Saints. The Mountaineers have now lost two straight; both defeats coming this weekend.

Mohawk got off to a hot shooting day in the first quarter, but as did St. Clair. The Mountaineers knocked down three threes with the Saints making five of their own. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) and Peyton Connolly (Hamilton, ON) combined for 17 of Mohawk's 22 first quarter points.

The Mountaineers found themselves down by three after the first 10.

In the second quarter Mohawk buckled down defensively, holding the Saints to 23.8 per cent shooting from the field and one-of-nine from three. The Mountaineers bench – who scored a combined two points in Friday nights loss to the Lambton Lions – would receive nine points combined from Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, ON) and Kayla Vanbeek (Binbrook, ON) in the second quarter versus the Saints.

St. Clair would lead Mohawk by 37-36 at halftime.

The Mountaineers mismanagement of the basketball in the third quarter allowed the Saints to extend their lead to 10. Mohawk would have nine of their 19 turnovers in the third frame.

Despite defending well in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers could only manage to get the Saints lead down to four before going cold offensively again.

As a team Mohawk outrebounded St. Clair 42-35 in the game and had a plus-four advantage in the paint.

Jacob finished the game with 13 points, while Connolly and Tatjana Boskovic (Hamilton, ON) both scored 11 apiece.

The Mountaineers return to the DBARC for their next game when they host the Niagara Knights on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m.
