Mountaineers hold off Falcons to start the season

HAMILTON, Ont. – A big fourth quarter spark lifted the Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team to a 79-68 win over the Fanshawe Falcons.

It was a slow start for Mohawk as they shot 29.4 per cent from the field in the first quarter and one-of-six from three. Fanshawe on the other hand shot 50 per cent to take a 25-14 advantage in the opening 10 minutes.

The Mountaineers offense began to settle in during the second. Down 12 Mohawk went on an 8-0 run midway through the quarter to cut the Fanshawe lead to three. The Falcons responded to go back up nine, but the Mountaineers pushed another 11-2 run to bring things even at 37-37 at halftime.

Neither team found their flow in the third quarter as they both shot below 40 per cent. Mohawk held a small two-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The first five minutes of play in the fourth went back and forth. Then with 4:35 left and the Mountaineers leading 65-64, Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) had a monster dunk to energize both his team and the home crowd. The dunk was the start of a 9-0 run for Mohawk.

Fanshawe could not close the gap in the final two minutes as the Mountaineers start the 2024-25 campaign with a win.

Mohawk shot 43.5 per cent from the field as a team, but struggled beyond the arc, shooting five-for-28.

Harpreet Gill (Brampton, Ont.) started his season with a double-double, leading the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Dosen also had a double-double of his own with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Raivone Young (Halifax, NS.) provided 13 points and Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) had 12.

The Mountaineers will host the Redeemer Royals next on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m.
