Mountaineers dethrone Royals at home

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball showcased pure dominance in a 106-65 victory over the Redeemer Royals.
 
The game was one-sided right from the beginning as the Mountaineers went on a 21-3 run in the final five minutes of the first quarter to take a 31-9 lead. In the opening frame, Mohawk shot 58.3 per cent from the field, forced 10 Redeemer turnovers and won the rebound battle 15-5.
 
In the second quarter the Royals began to find their scoring, but they could not slow down the Mountaineers offense. Mohawk extended their lead by six and led 58-30 at halftime.
 
It was much of the same in the second half with Redeemer struggling to slowdown the Mohawk offense. For the game the Mountaineers shot 53.6 per cent and held their opponents to 35.4 per cent. Mohawk also made 12 threes and were efficient 41.4 per cent from beyond the arc.
 
The Mountaineers had 31 assists on their 45 made field goals, scored 30 points off turnovers and had 17 second chance points.
 
For the second consecutive game, Harpreet Gill (Brampton, Ont.) led Mohawk in scoring with 19 and added seven rebounds. The Mountaineers also received an impressive performance from first-year guard Eltom Adam (Hamilton, Ont.), who scored 15-points on six-of-eight shooting and three made threes.
 
Other standouts for Mohawk included Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.), Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) and Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.), all of who finished the contest with 14 points each.
 
The Mountaineers will look to keep their early success going in their first road contest of the season on Oct. 25 when they play the Sheridan Bruins in Brampton, Ont.
