Mountaineers hang on to defeat Bruins

Box Score BRAMPTON, Ont. – A big first quarter lifted the Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team to a 78-73 victory over the Sheridan Bruins.

Mohawk begins the season with three consecutive wins with the defeat of the Bruins being the first on the road.

The Mountaineers started the game on a 14-3 run and finished the first quarter with a 33-17 advantage. As a team Mohawk shot 47.6 per cent and made five threes in the opening frame.

In the second quarter the game flipped as the Mountaineers offense went cold, only making four field goals, missing all eight three-pointers and another eight at the free throw line. Sheridan didn't shoot the ball particularly well either, but they cut the Mohawk lead to two at halftime.

The cold shooting continued for both teams to start the second half as the Bruins took a five-point lead with 5:06 left in the third. The Mountaineers responded with a mini run to close out the quarter with a 55-53 lead.

Sheridan answered early in the fourth to take 59-57 lead, but it would be the last time they would be in front as Mohawk's 7-0 run gave them a 64-59 lead with 6:24 to go. The Bruins got within three, but the Mountaineers held on for the final five minutes to grab the victory.

Raivone Young (Halifax, NS) scored 11 of his game-high 21 in the first quarter. Harpreet Gill (Brampton, Ont.) provided 15 points and eight rebounds.

Mohawk will look to keep their early success going on Oct. 30 when they play the Humber Hawks in Brampton, Ont. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
