NANAIMO, B.C. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team fell 85-71 to the Dynamiques de Brébeuf in a CCAA National Championship semi-final Thursday.
With the loss, Mohawk moves to the bronze medal bracket and will play in the bronze semi-final Friday.
The Mountaineers struggled offensively for much of the game despite early chances to take control. Mohawk trailed 11-5 three minutes in, as Brébeuf shot 58.8 per cent from the field in the opening quarter to take a 25-16 lead.
Both teams cooled off in the second quarter. Mohawk shot 31.8 per cent, while Brébeuf shot 35.3 per cent, extending its lead by one point heading into halftime.
Mohawk continued to search for rhythm in the third, scoring just 14 points in the frame as Brébeuf pushed its advantage to 59-46.
The Mountaineers cut the deficit to eight early in the fourth quarter, but the Dynamiques responded to restore control and hold off any comeback attempt.
Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) led Mohawk with 20 points. Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.) and Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) each added 13.
Mohawk will face the Lethbridge Kodiaks in the bronze semifinal Friday at 8 p.m.
