NANAIMO, B.C. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team advanced to the CCAA National Championship bronze medal game with a 94-70 victory over the Lethbridge Kodiaks.
Mohawk opened strong, building a 25-16 lead after the first quarter while shooting 52.6 per cent from the field.
The Mountaineers extended their advantage in the second quarter, again shooting 50 per cent, and took a 54-33 lead into halftime.
Mohawk's offence cooled in the third quarter, shooting 15.8 per cent and scoring 14 points. Lethbridge capitalized, trimming 10 points from the deficit by the end of the frame.
The Mountaineers responded in the fourth quarter, holding the Kodiaks to 22.2 per cent shooting. Mohawk stretched its lead to as many as 26 points with 16 seconds remaining.
Mohawk outrebounded Lethbridge 41-32. Both teams struggled with turnovers, as the Mountaineers committed 23 while the Kodiaks had 25.
All five Mohawk starters scored in double figures. Scott Jenkins (Hamilton, Ont.) and Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) led the way with 16 points each, while Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.) added 13. Marko Dosen (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 12 and Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.) chipped in with 11.
Mohawk will play for bronze Saturday at 6 p.m. ET against the winner of the other bronze semifinal between the Humber Hawks and Camosun Chargers.
