Mountaineers fall short in CCAA bronze medal game

NANAIMO, B.C. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team fell 48-44 to the Camosun Chargers in the bronze medal game at the 2026 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship.

Both teams struggled offensively throughout, with Mohawk shooting 23 per cent from the field, while Camosun shot 28.3 per cent.

Mohawk took nearly six minutes to score their first point, with Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) hitting a free throw. The Mountaineers trailed 8-1 at that point but found a rhythm late in the quarter to cut the deficit to 10-8.

Neither team reached double digits in the second quarter, as the Chargers held a narrow 17-16 lead at halftime.

The Mountaineers took their first lead of the game 2:30 into the third quarter and extended it late in the frame, carrying a 32-29 advantage into the fourth.

Mohawk built its largest lead of the game early in the final quarter, going up by six. The Mountaineers still led by six with under four minutes remaining, but Camosun rallied to tie the game 44-44 with 2:28 to play. Mohawk was held scoreless the rest of the way, while the Chargers took the lead with 1:54 remaining and sealed the win at the free throw line.

Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) was named Mohawk's player of the game with nine points.

The fourth-place finish matches the program's second-best result at the national championship, tying the 2015 team.

Mohawk will return to the national tournament next season with an automatic berth as host. The 2027 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship is scheduled for March 18-21 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.
