Mountaineers win battle of Hamilton over Royals

HAMILTON, Ont. – In a cross-city battle, the Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team defeated the Redeemer Royals 69-45.
 
Mohawk was in complete control of the game from the beginning, trailing no more than three points at any point. The Mountaineers fell behind 5-2 early, but took their first lead at the 5:30 mark of the first quarter and didn't let up after that.
 
In the first half Mohawk held the Redeemer offense to 18.2 per cent shooting to take a 39-21 lead at halftime. The Mountaineers outscored the Royals by 11-points in the second quarter, led by nine points from Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.).
 
The poor shooting for Redeemer continued in the third quarter, but Mohawk wasn't any better. The Mountaineers shot 25 per cent from the field and won the quarter 10-7.
 
Mohawk wouldn't lose its composure with the big lead and go on to win by 24 points.
 
Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB.) led the Mountaineers in scoring for the second consecutive game, dropping 21 points. Dahawy finished with 13-points and Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) added 12, meanwhile Tiffany Williams (Hamilton, Ont.) had a near double-double with 10-points and nine rebounds.
 
Up next for Mohawk will be their first road game of the season as they head to Brampton, Ont. to play the Sheridan Bruins on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
