No. 7 Mountaineers fall to No. 11 Hawks

TORONTO, Ont. – The No. 7 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team lost 85-78 to the No. 11 Humber Hawks. It is the Mountaineers first loss of the 2024-25 season.
 
It was an even contest between two teams determined to prove themselves as an OCAA west division powerhouse.
 
In the opening quarter Mohawk held a 5-0 and 13-7 lead, but Humber closed out the quarter on a 13-6 run to go up 20-19.
 
The teams traded leads early in the second, but the Hawks found themselves up 38-29 with 3:43 left in the half. In the final three minutes the Mountaineers went on a run of their own to take the game into half tied 42-42.
 
Play remained even in the third quarter with the teams knotted up at 65-65.
 
With 4:13 remaining in the contest Mohawk held a 74-70 lead after two made free throws from Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.). Less than a minute later Caldre Campbell (Hamilton, Ont.) knocked down a triple to put the Mountaineers up 77-73. Despite momentum the wheels fell off for Mohawk as Humber went on a 12-1 run to closeout the game.
 
It wasn't an ideal game for Mohawk who shot 36.6 per cent from the field and 30 per cent from three. The Mountaineers were also outrebounded 57-41 and lost the points off turnovers battle 22-13.
 
Harpreet Gill (Brampton, Ont.) once again led Mohawk in scoring with 18 points. Raza was credited with 14 points and Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) provided 12.
 
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back on Nov. 9 during Mohawk's Super Saturday when they host the Sheridan Bruins. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
