Mountaineers perfect start ended by Hawks

TORONTO, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team was handed their first loss of the season by the Humber Hawks, 73-57.

It was a tough night taking care of the basketball for Mohawk as they turned the ball over 17 times for 24 Humber points, versus eight turnovers for the Hawks that resulted in four-points for the Mountaineers.

The two teams were even at 13-13 after the first quarter despite Mohawk holding Humber to 20 per cent shooting from the field.

In the second quarter the Mountaineers jumped out to a 10-0 run and their largest lead of 12 came with 2:28 left in the half. Despite holding the advantage late in the second, the Mohawk offense stalled as Humber closed out the first half on a 17-0 run to take a 32-27 lead.

The Mountaineers offense improved its efficiency in the third as they shot 42.9 per cent, but were held to 15 points for the quarter. Mohawk's deficit grew to nine going into the final quarter.

Humber's largest lead of the game of 19 points came with 1:48 left in the fourth, ultimately bringing the game out of reach for Mohawk.

Maddie Anderson (Whitby, Ont.) led the Mountaineers in scoring with 17 points on five made threes. Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) picked up a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds, while Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) scored 11 and Tiffany Williams provided 10 points.

The first loss of the season brings Mohawk's record to 3-1 through the first month of the campaign.

The Mountaineers return to the DBARC for their next matchup as they'll host the Sheridan Bruins on Nov. 9 for Super Saturday. The Mountaineers will be the first of four games hosted by Mohawk that day, starting at 1 p.m.
