Mountaineers down Knights for fourth consecutive win

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball improved their record to 4-0 following a 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25) victory over the Niagara Knights.

Both teams came into the contest undefeated to begin the 2024-25 OCAA season. It was also Jenny Pellegrino's first match as Mountaineer head coach versus her former team, as she spent 2019 to 2023 as the lead assistant for the Knights.

The action started off back and forth with an 8-8 tie, but Mohawk found rhythm to score six of the next seven to hold a 14-9 lead. Niagara got within one to make it a 20-19 set but after a timeout Mohawk was able to string together momentum to take the opening set.

Set two favoured the Knights early as they held a 7-4 advantage. The Mountaineers got back into the match as the two teams went on to trade points once again. At a 20-20 tie, Mohawk scored three straight and then gave themselves set point at 24-21, once again closing the door to lead 2-0 in the match.

It was more even play in set three until Niagara stretched a four-point advantage at 18-14. The Mountaineers crawled out of the deficit to make it even at 22-22, but the Knights scored three of the next four to extend the match.

The final set had momentum fully on the Mohawk side, particularly when the Mountaineers held a 7-6 lead and went on to score 10 of the next 14 points to lead 16-10. Mohawk shut the door from there to win the match in four.

Thea Spasic (Hamilton, Ont.) had a career-best 15 kills on a 38.7 kill percentage, while the second-year also provided 10 digs. Julia Marks (Lucan, Ont.) also provided an all-around game with 11 kills, four service aces and 11 digs. Additionally, Olivia Rosewell was an offensive weapon with 12 kills and Alora Lavallee (Milton, Ont.) set a career-high with 40 assists.

The Mountaineers will take their 4-0 record into a cross-city matchup versus the Redeemer Royals. Action will take place in Ancaster, Ont. On Nov. 2 with the start time set for 1 p.m.
